Obata Soke became a member of the Tokyo Wakakoma (an elite group of martial artists, who serve as fight scene choreographer and stunt men for Japanese television and movies) for which he was a trainer for several years. While working with the Wakakoma, Obata also learned such skills and archery from horseback (Bajutsu), the wearing of traditional armor (Yoroi), spear (Yarijutsu), Naginata, and various sword styles. In 1980, Obata Soke came to the USA after being entrusted with the title of Chief Instructor for North America of Toyama Ryu and Nakamura Ryu Batto Do by Nakamura Taizaburo, and Chief Instructor/Soke of USA Batto Do Federation by the All Japan Batto Do Federation. Sword related accidents were becoming more common, and the need for a stronger foundation in safety and accurate technique was needed. After about 10 years of teaching Batto Do, Obata Soke resigned his positions to develop the fundamentals of his own stylized sword art "Shinkendo"; a system based upon his experience, knowledge and historical research. When not instructing classes or seminars, Obata Soke works in the film industry writing screenplay, action coordinating and acting (appearing in monies such as Black Rain, Rage & Honor, Rising Sun, Demolition Man, The Shadow, Showdown in Little Tokyo and The Hunted).

His efforts and those of his instructors are only too evident from the fact that for 6 consecutive years, Obata Soke was the All Japan Batto Do champion, Ioriken Ryu Battojutsu champion for 4 years and Toyama Ryu All Japan champion for 2 years. Some of Soke’s ranks include Menkyo Kaiden, Keisho Denju, Shihan and various certifications.
